I associate the south, even Atl, Miami and Houston as a ”grass roots” style of hip hop tailored to the local culture. For example Miami Bass in the late 80’s, 90’s saw Luke and the 2 live crew become the break out group, Crunk music saw Lil Jon break out to the main stream. When these ”off shoots” of hip hop catch the main streams eye they tend to catapult the current star to the forefront until the novelty wears off. In a time now where hip hop is struggling and stagnate you need to be unique in order to blow up now. People, especially hip hop heads are tired of the same old hum drum nonsense. Just my opinion
