I feel you Chaz on P-Rock as well as Looking for the Perfect Beat but for me, it was 1980 and Rapper's Delight. First real exposure and Grandmaster Flash & Furious 5 all through HS. Man, we would moonwalk to class in between periods. it was crazy. You'd be sitting in class and someone would moonwalk or poplock past your door on the way to the bathroom. The class would be rolling! but yeah, Rapper's Delight launch it for me and the whole school had a daily contest to see who could be the first to recite the lyrics all the way through without messing up. We did this everyday at lunch. If you messed up a verse, you were done for the day. Come back tomorrow. It was insane. "The Breaks" & "Freedom" were the skating rink joints and the honeys pack the floor when they came on. But I remember Planet Rock being like the no. 1 joint on the Detroit radio countdown all summer in 82'. It was the best of times.

Hip hop was a way of life growing up in New York in the Pj's. I mean it was every where you had no choice but to be involved in something hip hop oriented…lol I guess it would have started with the jams in the park during the summertime. See the graffiti riddled trains passing by everyday. Finally WHBI playing hip hop music on the radio at night. Then finally the Breaks and Rappers Delight breaking onto mainstream radio. It was a wrap after that. Stay Focused

I got hooked on hip hop back in the day when…when i waS poor in the bronx in 1982 and my friends said they were going to 'THE DEUCE" to get money.I was 9 years old and never been to "THE DEUCE' let alone off the stoop…i went. They had a radio and a bucket and i couldnt figure out how that was going to make any money buti was off the block and on the number 2 train to manhattan. When we got off the subway we went up to times square and onto broadway where they started dumping trash out of a cardboard box and started breaking it down. we waalked to the corner ad they layed the card board down placed th bucket two feet in front of it. The radio which they cherished like gold but was nothing but a one cassette radio with detachable speakers was placed two feet away. Then the play button was pushed and out came the hardest most mesmerizing thing i ever heard… THE MESSAGE" and like moths t the flame my friends swarmed to the cardboard and i saw headspins, uprocking, windmills, backspins and suicides. The pedestrians walking by began to notice what was going on and started encircling us bobbing there heads and clapping there hands, i was so full of emotion of what i was witnessing i stepped out on that cardboard and let the music control me …i was zoned out. That day i performed some of the wackest b-boying moves in history…but the love of HIP HOP had to start somewhere.
