I'm just throwing this out here. Is it possible yall are just getting older? Also, is it possible that rap is changing with the socio-evolution of the black community? Rap today comes from a lot of educated brothers and sisters. Brothers and sisters with college educations. So again I ask, are you guys just getting older and the times are a changing?

There's definetly a decline in lyrical content nowadays. It's either guns or drugs…and then they aint sincere wit dat shit. They aint no fuckin gangstas! BUT, there are some real ones still out there. I just heard that new Jay Electronica. After the mixtape ended I was left speechless. This bruh is the future. I just pray that he gets the right backing. http://indy.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/11138/jay_electronica_victory.html

you have a point Sam. A very valid point. but if you listen to what plays on the radio the most, its all a great beat and mediocre lyrics. If you want to look at the difference in lyrical skills, listen to the Drake song with Eminem, Wayne and Kanye on it. Who's the best rapper on that song?

It's sad, the Art Form of RAP has "Terminal-Lyrical-Cancer!" Public Enemy, Nas, MC Lyte, Erik B & Rakim, (Pac & Biggie/RIP LEGENDS), Dead Prez, Lost Boyz, Bone Thugz, My boyz Wu Tang Clan (RIP. ODB!), Fugees, etc…when RAP was "HEALTHY"!

Yawl can't mention Souljah Boy without mentioning Lil Gay-Wayne!
Kissing another adult blk man str8 on the LIPzzz and referring to that man as yo DADDY, when he is NOT, has yet to be addressed by the Hip Hop World, which would have ENDED a mans career during the Old Skool Rap Era!

Hopefully Rappers like Lupe can provide the chemotherapy to whats ailing the game these days. it used to be a competition of who can flow the best. now its a competition about who's jeans is tighter, who sounds more like a crying robot, and how many middle school girls you can get to follow you on twitter and post videos of themselves doing the fruity little dances from their songs……AND YOU KNOW WHO IM TALKING ABOUT

@sam. 2 answer ur question about r we jus gettin older…… not me im only 19 n i dont like dis garbage dats bein played on da radio n shit. of course wen u talk 2 an older generation of course da generational gap plays into their opinion, but da facts r dat actual skill is not rewarded nowadays in "hip hop"

@mrs d. YES YES YES YES. i dont understand it. dey all on rick ross ass cuz he was a C.O. but lil wayne kisses grown men n its accepted. one gurl called me a hater cuz i called wayne a faggot 4 kissin birdman right on da lips n he said "im da only one he kisses" right on 106 n park. if dat aint sum gay shit i dont kno wat is. hip hop needs 2 get baq on da ball. all deez fake, false ass muhfuckaz need 2 make an exit frum da game. shit is ridiculous

I think "the machine" has a lot to do with this too. The fact that the targeted demographic is the youth, they don't want to hear anything other than Waka Flocka and Soulja Boy but it seems to me that they don't want to hear anything else because nothing else is being promoted. It's like the mainstream intentionally sweeps artistic creativity, lyricism and ANYTHING remotely intelligent as far under the rug as possible so that unless you're a die hard hip hop head, you won't know who to look for on the underground circuit. The flip to that is, as connoisseurs of the culture, we need to do more in the way of supporting the albums of the elite lyricists. It's one thing to big 'em up when we speak about them but it's another thing to actually get out and support. When Rakim's album dropped I copped it. When Raekwon's album dropped, I copped it. When Red & Meth dropped (though it was wack IMO) I copped it. I could sit here all day and name names of HIP HOP albums I BOUGHT. Not downloaded but BOUGHT. The only way "the machine" will allow a balance in the music between the trash and the treasure is if they see a profit in it. Right now all the profit is in the trash and that's why it keeps gettin recycled.

I turned my tablet to ashes / I got nothin left I can write wit
So I might get a lightnin rod and strike it across the sky in..
righteous plight to enlighten / i'll design the likeness of life wit
what i write n inscribe it in each grain of the sands of time n'til we timeless…..

All u need n the rap world now-a-days is a hook,bass,ad-libs, and tattoos. C'Mon Son

REAL TALK people lack intelligence enough to the point where people can pedal anything to them… Lil' Wayne, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Hurricane Chris, Young Berg… C'mon Son. Those guys collectively wouldn't be able to Beat Lupe, T.I., Eminem, Common, Mos Def. Either I'm getting old or kids today are easily impressed by half assed "lyrics."
